All AboutBOTOX®

Botulinum toxin type A, or BOTOX®, is a cosmetic procedure that is both loved and hated in the cosmetic industry. BOTOX® is actually the most common form or botulism bacteria, which ads to the controversy on top of overuse making a persons face look "frozen". What started out to help muscles in the eye in 1977 and muscle spasms in 1989 has become most popular since 1996 for cosmetic reasons. It's the easiest way to get the fountain of youth as it gets rid of wrinkles for up to six months in the treated area.

Benefits of BOTOX®

Even though the treatment of BOTOX® will last for a half a year at best, some wrinkles will remain gone for quite some time. BOTOX® trains the muscle to not tense up and it can continue to not wrinkle in the same place after the treatment has run it's course. In some ways BOTOX® can be used as a preventative measure for wrinkles to set in.

Other than avoiding if your pregnant or breastfeeding, BOTOX® is very safe and has been approved by the FDA and has been used for 25 years. Go light on the BOTOX® even if you love the results and you will get a natural look, not a frozen look.

How the BOTOX® Procedure Works

The person receiving BOTOX® should refrain from alchohol one week prior to the procedure and aspirin and ibuprofin two weeks prior to reduce the risk of bruising. Minor discomfort is felt, but no anesthesia is necessary when it is injected into the specific muscle that is being treated. Afterwards patients are asked to not lie down, massage or rub the area for four hours to not allow the injected Botox to spread to other areas. Bruising may occure and saggy eyelids for a short time are some of the shortcomings with the treatment. A typical session to one area costs $400, and the most common area is inbetween the eyebrows.

Other Ways to Reduce Wrinkles and Fine Lines

While Botox works with immobilizing the muscle, their are Injectable Dermal Fillers that can achieve the goal of reducing fine lines and wrinkles while giving the skin a more plump look. Collagen that is a natural fiber in the skin that holds the skin together in a elastic way breaks down while we age. Many fillers stimulate collagan growth or replace the loss to maintain a youthful look. Read more on our page about fillers for the skin here.
