Full Body Break Out

I am 12 weeks pregnant and have a rash over my back, shoulders and stomach that is very much like acne except that it itches. These bumps are painful when I scratch them (which I try not to do) but nothing seems to help them go away. I am a bridesmaid in about 2 weeks and I would really rather not have hideous skin. My nurse pratctioner had no solution. I clean the areas daily (without over-cleaning), what more can I do?

A

What you may be experiencing is some sort of contact dermatitis. Skin can become very sensitive during pregnancy. Check to make sure you have not changed anything in your daily routine, for example a new laundry detergent, moisturizer, or soap. The best treatment is an over the counter hydrocortisone cream like Cortaid. You may also be experiencing a skin condition that can occur during pregnancy called keratosis pilaris. This is a common skin condition in which keratin, a protein in the skin, forms hard plugs within hair follicles. In mild cases these bumps are commonly found on the backs of upper arms, on buttocks, and thighs. The condition is generally worse in winter, is benign, and will eventually disappear. Topical treatments with medications containing lactic acid, Retin-A, or vitamin D may be recommended by your physician or pharmacist.

Remember, Miss Violet says, "Do not be talked into a pink taffeta bridesmaid dress."
